Day 1 roundup: China wins women's 53kg gold

(Beijing, January 22) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 International Weightlifting Invitational Tournament opened at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnasium today as Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam won the men's 56kg class and China's Wang Mingjuan claimed the gold in the women's 53kg class.

According to tournament rules, the Group Bs are made up of all Chinese lifters with their results not being counted in the rankings.

In the Group A competition of the women's 53kg held this afternoon, China's Wang Mingjuan succeeded at 92kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 205kg to win the gold. Wang's teammate Cen Lijuan took the silver with 201kg while Cheleephay Suda of Thailand had to be content with a bronze by making it 200kg.

In the Group B competition earlier, Xiong Li lifted 88kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean & jerk to be the first with a total of 200kg, followed by Wang Chengyan's 185kg and 180kg.

Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam crowned in men's 56kg class

In the men's 56kg Group A contest, China's Wu Jingbiao lifted 116kg, but failed at 123kg in the snatch. His compatriot Lu Jinbi succeeded at 118kg. Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam came first with 128kg and Cuban Alvarez Sergio was second with 120kg.

In the clean & jerk, Wu Jingbiao managed 140kg while Lu succeeded at 153kg, ahead of Alvarez Sergio's 151 and Hoang Anh Tuan's 150.

In total, Hoang took the gold with 278. China's Lu won the silver from Alvarez Sergio, despite the two lifting the same total of 271, as Lu was lighter than the Cuban.

Earlier, Cen Biao finished atop Group B with 270kg and Lu Guangbin, Xu Jingui and Zhu Xinwen placed second to fourth respectively.

Tomorrow will see the competitions of the men's +105kg class and the women's +75kg class.
