(Beijing, January 23) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 International Weightlifting Invitational Tournament wrapped up its two-day competitions this evening at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnasium, which will be hosting the Olympic weightlifting events this summer. China's women lifters Wang Mingjuan and Huang Huan took the titles of the 53kg and +75kg classes while Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam and Matthias Steiner of Germany grabbed the golds of the men's 56kg and +105kg categories respectively.
Four classes were staged in the tournament, and each consists of two groups with the results of the all-Chinese Group B not being counted in the rankings.
In the Group A competition of the women's 53kg held on the opening day, China's Wang Mingjuan succeeded at 92kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 205kg to win the gold. Wang's teammate Cen Lijuan took the silver with 201kg while Cheleephay Suda of Thailand had to be content with a bronze by making it 200kg.
In the Group B competition earlier, Xiong Li lifted 88kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean & jerk to be the first with a total of 200kg, followed by Wang Chengyan's 185kg and 180kg.
In the men's 56kg Group A contest, China's Wu Jingbiao lifted 116kg, but failed at 123kg in the snatch. His compatriot Lu Jinbi succeeded at 118kg. Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam came first with 128kg and Cuban Alvarez Sergio was second with 120kg.
In the clean & jerk, Wu Jingbiao managed 140kg while Lu succeeded at 153kg, ahead of Alvarez Sergio's 151 and Hoang Anh Tuan's 150.
In total, Hoang took the gold with 278. China's Lu won the silver from Alvarez Sergio, despite the two lifting the same total of 271, as Lu was lighter than the Cuban.
Earlier, Cen Biao finished atop Group B with 270kg and Lu Guangbin, Xu Jingui and Zhu Xinwen placed second to fourth respectively.
Today, Huang Huan of China pocketed the title of the women's +75kg class with 119kg in the snatch and 150kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 269kg. Greeks Aikaterini Roditi and Vasilika Kasapi finished second and third respectively, with 254kg and 250kg tandem. China's Li Rongyan was fifth with 229kg.
In the men's +105kg class Group A, Matthias Steiner of Germany grabbed the gold by collecting 193kg in the snatch and 230kg in the clean & jerk for 423kg as a whole. The silver went to Polish Grzegorz Kleszcz, who finished at a total of 395kg. China's Gao Le's total was 391kg, which earned him a bronze medal. The other Chinese Sun Haibo dropped out due to injury in the clean & jerk.
Earlier in the Group B all-Chinese affair, Liu Hao succeeded at a total of 350kg to beat Zhao Kang, who collected 322kg on aggregate.
